Starmer: Councils must prove they are fixing potholes or lose cash

Councils will be required to publish annual progress reports or face having funding withheld.

Prime Minister Starmer is requiring councils to publish annual reports detailing their progress on fixing potholes, including spending, potholes filled, and road condition, by June 30th. Councils risk losing 25% of a £500 million funding boost if they fail to demonstrate progress or solicit community input by October. The government has allocated an additional £4.8 billion to National Highways for motorway and major A-road projects. The LGA argues councils already spend more than they receive and need long-term funding for preventative measures. Conservatives criticize Labour's approach as insufficient, claiming Conservative councils repair more roads.
