Taliban arrest Afghan activist who campaigned for education of girls

Khan was picked up from his house in Kabul by Taliban officials, his brother says

Wazir Khan, a 25-year-old Afghan activist advocating for girls' education, was arrested by the Taliban on February 24. Khan, who ran a non-profit organization called Today Child focused on education in rural areas, was taken from his Kabul home, blindfolded, and tied. His family and supporters, including human rights advocate Samantha Leaning, are concerned about his safety and whereabouts. Khan used the hashtag "Let Afghan Girls Learn" on social media, which may have led to his arrest. The Taliban, who banned girls' education beyond sixth grade in 2020, have a history of arresting educators advocating for girls' rights, including Matiullah Wesa, who was arrested in March 2023. Khan's arrest highlights the ongoing suppression of girls' education in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.
