US Merchandise Trade Deficit Widens to Record on Import Surge

The US merchandise trade deficit widened unexpectedly in January to a record as imports surged ahead of President Donald Trump’s promised tariffs.

The U.S. merchandise trade deficit widened unexpectedly in January to a record $153.3 billion, up 25.6% from the previous month, according to Commerce Department data. Imports surged 11.9% to a record $325.4 billion, driven by industrial supplies and consumer goods, likely as businesses stockpiled ahead of President Donald Trump’s planned tariffs. The trade deficit, which reflects the gap between imports and exports, was fueled by high U.S. consumption rates and a strong dollar, making imports cheaper. More complete trade figures, including services, are expected in March.
