Wegovy: The obesity ‘wonderdrug’ comes to Ireland, but it will cost you

Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy is about to enter the Irish market but people will have to pay for it from their own pocket - for now at least

Novo Nordisk's obesity drug Wegovy is launching in Ireland, but patients will likely need to pay out-of-pocket, similar to Eli Lilly's Mounjaro. Wegovy, containing the same active ingredient as Ozempic in a higher dose, is approved for adults with a BMI of 30 or 27 with weight-related health issues. While Ireland is a strategic location for Novo Nordisk's manufacturing, Wegovy's reimbursement application remains unapproved and only Saxenda is currently approved for weight management in Ireland. A month's supply could cost around €290-€350, similar to the US cash price.
