Who is Mahmoud Khalil, the Palestinian Columbia grad facing deportation?

Khalil was inside his apartment when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers entered and detained him on the weekend.

Mahmoud Khalil, a Syrian-born Palestinian Columbia University graduate and pro-Palestinian activist, was arrested by ICE, sparking protests in New York. Authorities cited Trump's executive order prohibiting antisemitism as justification for seizing his student visa. Khalil, who led campus protests urging Columbia to divest from Israel, was initially detained in New Jersey before being moved to Louisiana. Efforts to deport him were temporarily blocked by a federal judge, who ordered a hearing in New York.
