2 suspects in migrant drownings in Akwesasne can be extradited to U.S., judge says

Two people accused of being part of a human smuggling operation tied to the drownings of eight migrants in the St. Lawrence River are one step closer to being extradited.

A Quebec Superior Court judge ruled that Stephanie Square and Rahsontanohstha Delormier can be extradited to the U.S. to face charges related to the 2023 drowning deaths of eight migrants, including a Romanian family, in the St. Lawrence River near Akwesasne. The suspects are accused of being part of a human smuggling operation. The defense argued that the deaths occurred in Canadian waters, but the judge stated that the extradition decision rests with the federal Justice Minister.
