2,000 year old remains found in Derry bog likely those of a female

The 2,000-year-old remains discovered in a Co Derry bog in 2023, initially thought to be a young boy, are now believed to be those of a woman, aged 17-22, dating to the Iron Age (343-1 BCE). Osteoarchaeological analysis revealed the "Ballymacombs More Woman" was likely intentionally decapitated as part of a ritualistic practice. A woven plant-based fabric was also found with the remains. The remains and artefact are undergoing preservation and further analysis at National Museums NI.
