Ancient remains discovered in Derry bog ‘likely to belong to young woman’

The Ballymacombs More Woman has been hailed as ‘one of the most important archaeological discoveries on the island of Ireland’.

Ancient remains discovered in a Derry bog in 2023, initially thought to be a teenage boy, are now believed to be those of a young woman (17-22 years old) from the Iron Age (343 BCE to 1 BCE). Dubbed the "Ballymacombs More Woman," her remains show evidence of ritual decapitation. A woven plant-based fabric, potentially associated with her, was also discovered. The remains are considered a significant archaeological find for Ireland and are currently being preserved and researched at National Museums NI.
