Ancient remains found in Co Derry bog ‘likely to belong to young woman’ who lived 2,000 years ago

The remains have been hailed as “one of the most important archaeological discoveries on the island of Ireland”.

Ancient human remains, dubbed the Ballymacombs More Woman, discovered in a Co Derry bog in 2023, are now believed to be those of a young woman (17-22 years old) who lived approximately 2,000 years ago during the Iron Age (343 BCE to 1 BCE). Osteoarchaeological analysis suggests intentional decapitation as the cause of death, potentially linked to ritual practices. A woven plant-based artifact was also found, and the discovery is considered archaeologically significant for the island of Ireland.
