'A huge honour': Calgary Police receive eagle feathers in Blackfoot ceremony

'We look at pathways of reconciliation and just being able to engage with the community, I think this is a huge step forward'

In a Blackfoot ceremony on March 25, 2025, the Calgary Police Service (CPS) received 15 eagle feathers from the Kainai Nation and Alberta Fish and Wildlife, adding to the one feather received in 2022, with the aim to equip all facilities with one. The feathers, housed in cedar boxes carved by Métis artist Bob Davis and lined with CPS uniform material by Michelle Whitney from Tsuut'ina Nation, will be used for swearing-in ceremonies and legal documents, symbolizing a step toward Truth and Reconciliation. The ceremony, held in CPS’s Indigenous Sacred Space, was considered a "huge honour" and a significant step in engaging with the community.
