Blow for Government as Lords vote against ending tax relief for private schools

The House of Lords voted against the government's plan to end charitable rate relief eligibility for private schools in England via the Non-Domestic (Multipliers and Private Schools) Bill. A Conservative amendment removing this provision passed with a 91-vote majority. Proponents of the amendment argued the measure would harm vulnerable children (especially those with SEND), unfairly punish charities, and burden the state sector, while the government maintains ending the relief would fund improvements to state education.
