‘Brixton Bard’ Alex Wheatle dies aged 62 after prostate cancer battle

Author Alex Wheatle, known as the "Brixton Bard," died at age 62 after battling prostate cancer, diagnosed in 2023. He was known for his books about life on London streets for young Black men, including the Crongton series, and his involvement in the 1981 Brixton riot, which inspired the Steve McQueen film "Alex Wheatle". He campaigned to raise prostate cancer awareness. Prostate Cancer UK is calling for proactive prostate cancer screening, especially for Black men who have a higher risk.
