Crongton creator Alex Wheatle dies aged 62 after prostate cancer

Author Alex Wheatle, known as the "Brixton Bard," died at age 62 after battling prostate cancer, diagnosed in 2023. Wheatle, known for his books about Black youth in London, including the Crongton series, was also involved in the 1981 Brixton riot, inspiring the film "Alex Wheatle" by Steve McQueen. He campaigned for prostate cancer awareness, highlighting the increased risk for Black men. Prostate Cancer UK mourned his loss and reiterated the need for early screening programs.
