A new prostate cancer surgery technique called NeuroSafe nearly doubles the chances of men retaining erectile function compared to standard surgery. NeuroSafe involves real-time examination of prostate tissue during surgery, allowing surgeons to preserve nerve tissue if the tumor hasn't spread to the outer layers. A trial of 344 men found that 39% of those who had the NeuroSafe procedure reported no or mild erectile dysfunction a year later, compared to 23% in the standard surgery group.
