Death of toddlers on same day at Scots hospital was not foreseeable, inquiry told

Cailyn Newman died a month before she would have turned two and her death in the emergency department happened less than eight hours after 22-month-old Sonny Campbell died.

An inquiry into the deaths of two toddlers, Cailyn Newman and Sonny Campbell, at Glasgow's Royal Hospital for Children found their deaths on the same day were not foreseeable. Both had been previously admitted and discharged. Sonny died from acute haemorrhagic leukoencephalitis, while Cailyn died from Streptococcus pneumonia and severe necrotising bronchial pneumonia. Reviews found no fault in Sonny's care and that Cailyn's death was not easily preventable.
