Funding for Ice District development reflects aim to be fair to Alberta’s 2 biggest cities: Smith

The Alberta government is working with the City of Edmonton and Edmonton Oilers owners to build a $408-million event park next to Rogers Place, which opened in 2016.

Alberta's government is investing nearly $200 million in Edmonton's Ice District expansion, including an event park and land servicing for future housing, aiming for fairness between Edmonton and Calgary's entertainment district funding. This includes $55 million for tearing down the Coliseum. Another $55 million is allocated to Calgary's new Flames arena as part of a previous deal. The funding has faced criticism and led to a caucus removal due to concerns about prioritizing urban areas over rural needs.
