Government will clean up Windermere, Environment Secretary Steve Reed to pledge

Mr Reed said: “Windermere is a stunningly beautiful national treasure – but it’s being choked by unacceptable levels of sewage pollution.”

Environment Secretary Steve Reed will pledge to clean up Windermere by ensuring only rainwater enters the lake, addressing sewage pollution. The government plans to upgrade water infrastructure, boost the local economy, and create jobs with over £100 billion in private investment. United Utilities will invest £200 million to upgrade wastewater treatment and reduce storm overflow spills. Government also plans to reduce pollution from private sewage discharges, supported by stronger regulation and utilizing funds from water company fines.
