Justice Department eyes combining ATF and DEA as part of broad restructuring

Justice Department leadership is proposing cutting some offices and dramatically restructuring the department, including combining the two agencies responsible for enforcing drug and gun laws, according to a memo reviewed by The Associated Press

The Justice Department is proposing a merger of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) as part of a larger reorganization effort. The DEA combats drug trafficking and has approximately 10,000 employees, while the ATF investigates federal firearm, explosives, arson, and alcohol/tobacco offenses and has roughly 5,000 employees.
