Measles case numbers soaring in Ontario as health officials urge immunization

Among those who have been infected recently are a newborn and seven pregnant women, Public Health Ontario says.

Ontario is experiencing a significant measles outbreak, with 372 cases reported since last fall, including 195 in the past two weeks, a sharp increase attributed to low immunization rates, primarily among those born after 1970. The outbreak, centered in southern Ontario but spreading eastward, has led to 31 hospitalizations, including 27 children, and infected seven pregnant women. Health officials urge immunization, citing outdated vaccination records and a lack of a real-time registry as contributing factors to the spread.
