Microsoft is discontinuing Skype on May 5, 2025, to focus on its Teams platform. Acquired 14 years ago, Skype once had 300 million users but now sees around 36 million monthly users. Microsoft began phasing out Skype for Business in 2017, ending it in 2021. Users have until May 5 to migrate data to Teams or download their information. Teams will replace Skype, with some features moving over, though Skype's phone call functionality won't be available in Teams Free. Users can migrate data using their Skype credentials, and data will be retained until the end of 2025 before deletion.
