Nathan McDonnell complained to gardaí about crime link rumours in months before €32m drug haul

The Co Kerry businessman was actually being investigated by a drugs unit at the time

In July 2023, Co Kerry businessman Nathan McDonnell complained to gardaí about online rumors of a Criminal Assets Bureau investigation into his business. Unbeknownst to uniformed officers, McDonnell was already under investigation by the Kerry Divisional Drugs Unit following a June 2023 raid. This investigation culminated in McDonnell's arrest on October 16, 2023, after he took possession of 546kg of crystal meth from the Mexican Sinaloa drug cartel at Cork Port, hidden in machinery. He later pleaded guilty to importing methylamphetamine, claiming financial pressure and fear for his family motivated his actions.
