Scared Antarctic researchers plead for help after ‘assault,’ ‘death threats’

The problems at the isolated SANAE IV base stem from email allegations that a team member attacked the base leader and made threats.

Researchers at the isolated SANAE IV base in Antarctica, run by the South African National Antarctic Program, are pleading for rescue due to alleged assault, sexual harassment, and death threats from a team member. The alleged perpetrator has undergone psychological evaluation and apologized. The South African Ministry of Environment is aware of the situation and stated that an intervention is in place. Previous reports indicate issues at other remote South African research bases and a high incidence of harassment and assault within the U.S. Antarctic Program.
