Slushie ice drinks leave 21 children in hospital, study reveals

Study highlights number of youngsters becoming unwell as a result of so-called ‘glycerol intoxication syndrome’



A study revealed that 21 children in the UK and Ireland were hospitalized with glycerol intoxication syndrome after consuming slush ice drinks containing glycerol. Researchers recommend children under eight avoid these drinks and are calling for revised public health advice due to the risk of symptoms like decreased consciousness and low blood sugar. The Food Standards Agency already advises against consumption for children under four.
