Social Protection officials may be allowed to sit in on Garda interviews in welfare fraud investigations

New legislation being examined by the Irish government would allow Social Protection officials with relevant expertise to participate in Garda interviews of suspects in complex welfare fraud cases. This follows a 2020 government review recommending the measure to improve efficiency and effectiveness of investigations. The proposed changes could be included in broader social welfare legislation being drafted by Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary, which also addresses unconstitutional pension provisions.
