A study found that type 2 diabetes significantly increases the risk of liver and pancreatic cancers, particularly in women. New-onset diabetes was linked to a near doubling of pancreatic cancer risk and a near five-fold increase in liver cancer risk in women, and a 74% increase and near quadrupling in men, respectively, after five years. The risk of bowel cancer also increased. Researchers suspect that high insulin levels, high blood glucose, and chronic inflammation may be driving the increased cancer risk.
