University of Oxford historian threatened with deportation after spending 691 days over the past decade in India doing research

A University of Oxford historian, Manikarnika Dutta, faces potential deportation from the UK after exceeding the permitted number of days (548) abroad for indefinite leave to remain due to research trips to India. The Home Office cited her time spent abroad and lack of family life in Britain as reasons. Dutta's lawyer argues these trips were essential to her academic work. Similar cases, such as Dr. Miwa Hirono's in 2015 and Dr Asiya Islam have highlighted concerns about the UK's immigration policies deterring talented researchers.
