Westminster urged to act to reduce energy bills for those in greatest need

Scottish climate action minister Alasdair Allan called for a discounted rate to be introduced with a level of discount ‘proportionate to need’.

Scottish climate action minister Alasdair Allan urged the UK government to urgently introduce a discounted energy rate for vulnerable consumers, proportionate to need. This call follows recommendations from a Scottish Government working group comprised of energy firms and consumer bodies. Allan criticizes existing flat-rate rebates as insufficient and advocates for a unit rate discount based on metrics like income and medical need, emphasizing Westminster's power to legislate energy prices and address fuel poverty. The UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero stated they are planning to expand the Warm Home Discount to help more households.
