What is probate? Government cuts wait times by half in six months

The process has been shortened to less than a week for many, thanks to digital applications and additional staffing

The UK Ministry of Justice's Court and Tribunals Service reduced average probate wait times from 12 weeks at the end of 2023 to just over four weeks in December 2024, halving the wait in six months. This reduction is attributed to clearing a backlog from the Covid-19 pandemic. Probate is the legal right to manage a deceased person's estate. It is not always required, depending on the assets and ownership structure.
