'An important step': City set to sign first Memorandum of Understanding with Blackfoot Confederacy

Members of council's intergovernmental affairs committee unanimously endorsed the final draft of the non-binding agreement on Thursday.

The City of Calgary is preparing to sign its first Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksikaitsitapi), comprised of the Siksika Nation, Piikani Nation, and Blood Tribe (Kainai). The MoU, requested by the Confederacy in 2023, aims to establish a collaborative relationship and outlines how the two governing bodies will engage with one another. The agreement, which awaits council approval, is considered a "historic moment" and an act of reconciliation. A signing ceremony is planned for the spring.
