Apple is challenging a U.K. government order requiring it to create a backdoor for encrypted iCloud backups, targeting its Advanced Data Protection (ADP) feature. The order, issued by the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT), was revealed through press leaks in January. In response, Apple terminated U.K. users' access to the secure iCloud storage feature and filed a challenge with the IPT. Apple continues offering the encrypted backups in other markets, leading the U.K. to argue non-compliance. This marks the first test of the U.K.'s encryption powers in the IPT, with the hearing likely held in secret. Apple has not issued new statements but referenced prior remarks.
