Lifting weights helps older people tackle insomnia, research suggests

Strong evidence links sleeplessness to depression, anxiety and other health conditions.



A study by Mahidol University researchers found that resistance exercises, such as weight lifting, are most effective in reducing insomnia among older adults. The research analyzed 24 trials involving 2,045 participants aged 60 and over, comparing various exercises including aerobic, resistance, balance, flexibility, and combination types. Resistance training was identified as the most beneficial for improving sleep quality, with aerobic and combination exercises also showing positive effects but being less effective. The findings highlight the importance of muscle-strengthening exercises in enhancing sleep quality for older adults.
