‘Matter of survival’: All of Earth’s glacier regions shrank again in 2024, says UN

‘Preservation of glaciers is a not just an environmental, economic and societal necessity: it’s a matter of survival,’ said the UN’s World Meteorological Organisation.

In 2024, all 19 of Earth's glacier regions experienced a net mass loss for the third consecutive year, according to the UN. This follows the largest three-year glacier loss on record (2022-2024), with over 9,000 billion tonnes lost since 1975. At current rates, many glaciers in various regions will not survive the 21st century. The UN emphasizes combating global warming through reduced emissions.
