National Gallery’s unused €120,000 scanner under scrutiny ahead of Arts department review

Arts Minister Patrick O'Donovan called the National Gallery's purchase of an unused €125,000 X-ray scanner eight years ago "hugely embarrassing" for his department, alongside a failed Arts Council computer project that cost €5.3 million. The scanner, intended to examine the Gallery's collection, including Caravaggio's "The Taking of Christ," requires a lead-lined room which the Gallery lacks. The Minister updated the Cabinet on the issue. Opposition parties are calling for accountability and an inquiry into the spending.
