North Sea collision latest: Dozens of casualties after ‘massive fireball’ rips through Stena Immaculate tanker
An oil tanker carrying jet fuel for the US military collided with a cargo ship carrying sodium cyanide in the North Sea off the East Yorkshire coast, causing a fire and multiple explosions. Over 30 casualties were brought ashore. The tanker, at anchor, was struck by the cargo ship, releasing fuel. There is concern about the potential environmental impact and the danger of sodium cyanide exposure. Preliminary reports suggest human error may have contributed to the collision, with poor visibility also a factor.
