More than 3,300 obsolete laws from 19th century set to be repealed

Laws include proclamations on beatings with sticks and nettles, breaking eggs and an order banning a Daniel O’Connell rally

Ireland is set to repeal over 3,300 obsolete 19th-century laws, including proclamations related to crimes like arson, assault, and potato-related incidents, as well as regulations concerning the British Empire and military. This follows previous acts repealing obsolete primary legislation before independence and secondary legislation up to 1821, and is based on a Law Reform Commission review of over 40,000 secondary instruments.
